Filed under: Media, Signs of Apocalypse
New York Times critic Gina Bellafante reviewed “The Hills” yesterday and called Heidi Montag a “feminist hero” because Heidi focuses more on her career and stands up to that bubble-headed dolt she’s dating. I can’t really comment on the feminist perspectives explored in “The Hills” because I only watched it once and the only thing I came away with was that the girls say “like” a lot and their voices sounded like ducks quacking. Oh yeah, and I was bored senseless.
Looking for some feminist reaction, I stumbled onto Feministing.org and discovered that Bellafante wrote a 1998 essay for Time magazine declaring feminism dead and “devolved into the silly” with “popular culture [insisting] on offering images of grown single women as frazzled, self-absorbed girls.” Soooo, are frazzled, self-absorbed girls with fake body parts, fake jobs, and fake lives the new feminist icons?
My gut tells me Ms. Bellafante was dishing out a little healthy satire in yesterday’s article. She was joking! Right?

14,
I’m hoping Bellafante was joking with the Hiedi reference just like I’m hoping you are joking with the Naomi Wolf reference!

With that logic, I must be the ultimate feminist. I’m killing myself with an accounting major.

As said above, excellent choice of photo juxtaposition
After reading the article, she must be joking - she described Lauren as Baroque and Whitney as evoking the Shakespearian mute.
I can’t even watch three minutes of The Hills and its sister, Laguna Beach, without wanting to hurl something at the TV. All those spoiled kids with absolutely nothing to offer the world and nothing in their heads.

Having said that, whatever Bellafonte’s intentions it was worth reading it just to learn that Heidi’s parents live in a place called “Crested Butte.” Sounds like something straight out of Little Britain.

I dare say Little Britain is a far better example of feminism than anything we have come up with these days.

14, I love your sense of humor.
Heidi is as much a model of feminism as I am.
But in a totally different she-is-a-sex-object vs. I-am-a-man way.

She’s not sexy, she’s a cookie cutter bimbo off of the assembly line! I’m letting my subscription to the Times go.
Oh, and Lawrewvcd-
You should go straight to Richromances dot com,
because I know Heidi personally,
and she is single and has a trick pelvis,
and I’m sure she’d LOVE to go out with you.

So has anyone heard the 30 second nightmarish preview from her new single “No More”? I started playing it from the People Magazine website and honestly, my coworker in the desk in front me turned around and asked me if I heard a dog barking!! I told her she was close but it was just good ol’ Speidi!! What sucks though it I’m going to have to wait an hour for my stomach to settle before I start eating my lunch.
