R.I.P. Ike Turner

Ike Turner, musician, record producer and former husband of Tina Turner, died at his suburban San Diego home yesterday. He was 76.

Sources close to the family tell TMZ he may have died in his sleep.

Ike is survived by some great music, as many as 14 ex-wives, four known children and a legacy of abuse and denial. (”Sure, I’ve slapped Tina… There have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her.”)

Hey, Ike, tell the Devil that Candy says, “Hi!” (He knows me well.  He often accompanies me to bars and suggests rounds of tequila shots.)

He caused all kinds of mayhem and yet he dies in his sleep. He MUST have been part of that secret cult that Jay-Z belongs to.

  2. Happy Go Lucky

Clarification on the Jay Z comment please??
    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Rot in hell, Ike Turner.

If there were a show called
    “My Favorite Pimp” Ike could
    have been the star.

    Dear Happy,
according to the genius 14, (gallery of the absurd)who is the genius CANDY’s partner in crime sometimes, there is some sort of hokey pokey devil worship group composed of insanely rich people. Jay-Z belongs allegedly. Check out GOTA if you haven’t. Is very much fun!

ps. My fav pimp!!!!!!-thank you librarian-am laughing so hard I’m having seizures!

Actually, Ike was not the villain people think he was. You heard alot of the other side of the story, which was pretty much accurate, but Tina was not as innocent as you were led to believe…that being the one flaw in the story. There are alot of interesting things that still haven’t come out about the whole account. Fact is, Tina was as wild as Ike, believe it or not???

Librarian, your comments about him being a pimp are very close to a certain truth. But what is a pimp???: The Enabled. And what is a prostitute???: The Enabler. Both secretly enjoying their roles in the relationship. But sometimes, the Enabled and the Enabler–are one in the same…and when that happens, neither are the victim or the victimizer–rather, they are just players adopting roles in a much greater and wider metaphorical S&M game.

  8. Bee Hind

    Ike may have been talented,
    but the man had problems.
    Rule #1- Don’t ever hit a woman.
    Tina may have been “wild”
but that gave him no right to punch her.

    RIP shithead.

  9. Peace be with you…

  10. Happy Go Lucky

Thanks Vernice, will check it out!

  11. Ah, the joys of wife beating. She deserved it. What did she do to instigate it. Stupid wild woman. If only she had behaved, he never would have beat her.

Well, domestic abuse is not acceptable regardless of how wild the woman. Imagine that. People get away with such abuse because there are no consequences.

  12. Tellin Ya What I Know

First, poor Ike lost his title of “Most Disgusting Husband” back when O.J. came on the scene…and now this! Show some respect people!

I didn’t say Tina instigated anything. Those are your words, nor do I approve of wife beating…or husband beating, or domestic violence. As I said in my original post, you have only heard one side of the story. What the whole and full truth of the matter is, we will probably never know…but all things were not as they appear as far as Tina’s account, and I’m sure even Ike’s. The truth is probably to be found somewhere in the middle, as it is in most cases…perhaps even yours.

  14. “Actually, Ike was not the villain people think he is.”

So you’re saying what here, that he wasn’t a wife beater, that it’s all lies?

“Fact is, Tina was as wild as Ike, believe it or not???”

This assertion dismisses Ike’s responsibility for his wife beating actions. You’ve tossed it out the window by saying she was as wild as him. Not cool. Yes, there are 3 sides to every story, but none of them ever justifies spouse beatings. Was Tina driving him crazy? Was she threatening him? Was she cheating on him–or was she beating him, as you suggest, by saying she was as wild as him? He certainly (being The Man back in those days, with all the decision making power) could have simply left, if she was as wild as he was, instead of beating her.

he was an asshole. rot in hell, ike.

  16. Zip

No…it doesn’t. You have intentionally taken selective quotes out of context, and not considered or examined my statement as a whole, and that choice is suspect.

Did you know that men are responsible for commiting half of all acts of domestic violence in the United States, according to stats??? Well, the other half of all domestic violence incidents are commited by women, which is also a fact.

My point??? My mom is a nurse. She, on occasion, would speak to many police officers about domestic violence cases…and you know what they told her. They, as police officers, are reluctant to get involved with such cases as many couples, as strange as this may sound, “Make love that way”. Yes, some people, mean and women like fighting…and of course, there are consequences that come with that–people can, and do, get hurt.

You see, when a cop, or cops, are called to the scene of a domestic violence case, often times they become the target of violence by either spouse, no matter who is the perpetraitor of the violence in the first place. Man beats wife–cops show-up to arrest the male, and then the wife attacks the cops with a gun, knife, or her hands and feet, etc. Or, cops show-up on the scene, the wife is the aggressor–they try to arrest her and the husband grabs a gun, a knife…or attempts to attack them via his hand and feet (punching, kicking and so on).

Because of these problems, most police departments have now instituted a new rule mandating that they arrest both spouses, should they, the cops, be called to the scene of a domestic violence crime…and each spouse claims that the other, hit or threatened them.

I recall an incident in the 80s…that occured in the Los Angeles area, I think North Hollywood to be exact. A husband had been beating his wife for years. Well, one day, the wife’s brother showed up on the scene, interupting one of the couple’s infamous fights…as her husband was severely beating her. The brother beat the husband up in a overwhelming manner. What did he get for thanks from his sister??? She pulled a gun and shot her own brother to death…putting multiple bullets into his body. No warning shots, no nothing. Now you may be beginning to understand the strange dynamic that exists between some couples and why the police are so reluctant to get involved. What may appear to be a standard crime of abuse to the outside onlooker, may be considered to be something quite different to the players involved…who often ensnare others in their issues.

I have seen couples fight. Sometimes they are hot heads…other times they are on drugs or alcohol…or both. Sometimes one is the aggressor, and sometimes it is the other. Many times the fights lead to sex. Most couples will tell you that the best sex that they have ever had comes right after or during a fight. Male or female…I have seen it all. Hell, I’ve even seen gay couples go crazy on each other. And if you want to run with the sexist view that men are always the aggressors…and women can’t be violent–well, that is your choice…but we all know that isn’t true.

I for one…as I have stated before, think all domestic violence is wrong, but I’m a realist…who never parses his comments or certain uneasy truths in order to win favor. The fact of the matter is, you’d be better served never to drop your guard before anyone, male or female…for they, people in general, will surprise you most every time–and you should be surprised when they don’t surprise you.

As far as Ike and Tina Turner are concerned, I wasn’t just making a random comment. I have inside information that all was not as it appeared…and if you have ever been involved with the entertainment industry you would already know that half of the things you hear, or read, are a lie…and the other half are half truths mixed with lies. In respect to them, Ike and Tina, choosing to stay together as long as they did…that was a shared choice…and should speak volumes about their shared decision.

Now, my “wild” statement was expressly addressing the comment about Ike being a so-called “pimp”. If you take the time to read between the lines with concern to my previous words, your face will turn red when you begin to consider the implied meaning to my statement…about “the enabled and enabler”, something that, as of this writing you have completely missed. The real true story of Ike and Tina is a lot more seamy than you know…but that’s just show biz…and that’s just Hollywood…and that’s just real life.

Don’t blame me for telling you about the pink flying elephant in the room that everybody seems to be ignoring, as it exists…and isn’t going away until we are all bold enough to face it, acknowledge it, address it, and confront it with a real discussion…not just more ducking and dodging of the real facts of life which make-up and form this very strange and disturbed world of ours.

Dear Zip: points well made, and
    well taken. But Ike’s
    behavior has been independently
verified by many — including, for
example, Keith Richards (who admired Ike’s
music and contributions to music history).

Richards saw Ike pistol-whip one of
his own people. Keith’s comment: He acts
like a goddamned pimp. This was
in a long-ago Vanity Fair article.

    I’m just sayin’.

  18. Zip

    Hi, Librarian

I never negated Ike’s behavior. I am simply pointing out that it takes two to tango in a relationship…and both people were hot blooded…and created the drama that unfolded. Was Ike worse??? Probably, but they each shared a ample part in the turmoil. Phil Spector, who used to attend my old high school, Fairfax High in LA, decades before I got there, was just as bad as Ike, and also worked with…and was possibly sleeping with Tina…while she was still married to a very jealous Ike Turner.

However, when it comes to The Rolling Stones, they have strongly implied that they know of music industry mafia hits. What’s very interesting though…is sadly…I know for a fact…that they are right.
