In today’s news that makes me feel slightly less guilty about my 22-lb. cat, this adorable eight-month-old baby boy and mini-Michelin Man (I mean that in the sweetest way) in Jilin, Northeast China weighs more than 40 pounds. Although he only weighed about 7 pounds when he was born, his parents tell my favorite newspaper, the Daily Mail, that he starting putting on extra weight when he was one month old.
His mother nurses him more than 20 times a day because he often feels hungry. (Note to his mother: Might help if you stop feeding him 20 times a day. –Dr. Candy) Because of his obesity, the poor guy is unable to crawl or stand.
Rather than add my own thoughts on this story, I thought I’d share the wisdom of a Daily Mail commenter with you:
We are living in a time when children don’t go out to play anymore. They rather sit on the sofa all day and play video games.

You hear that, eight-month-old baby? Lay off the Xbox and go shoot some hoops instead!

nursing a baby will NEVER make one weigh more than its supposed to. babies know how much they need. shes probably feeding him too much other food or formula

Boy, this baby’s mama is setting him up for some
serious health issues. It is in no way normal to breast feed a child twenty times a day. I bet she does it to keep him from crying. Also, twenty times a day?!?! Is he permantly attached to her tit or what?
F**k up for this little cutie.

It reminds me of those “big babies” show that Maury Povich puts on. I feel so sorry for what those kids will go through. I know it’s hard to ignore childrens whines and tantrums but how would they know that they prefer Pizza, french fries, fried chicken and ice cream if one didn’t feed them enough of that food to develop a preference?
At that age, kids are so programmable, any healthy substitute will start to satisfy them. And another thing about kids that age–they don’t drive or go to the supermarket. So what they eat is what the parents buy. Putting a hot dog in their hand is the equivalent of a loaded gun.
I have had my weight struggles, but at least it happened AFTER puberty. I can’t imagine not being able to run and play with other kids the way I did, not to mention the teasing.

Why does Maury insist on parading these children across the stage in sports bras and shorts, as if we couldn’t see they were overweight without that? Why can’t they just use video feed of the children instead of subjecting them to that public exposure and humiliation?

As for the crawling and standing, though he’s huge, remember this one is only 8-month-old ! He’s not supposed to be able to stand by himself, and some babies never crawl anyway, since they hate facing the ground…
While he’s very fat, I don’t see how it could be the mother’s fault. Yemango is right : overfeeding a baby is next to impossible (ask worried parents of too thin babies). Many formulas are available in our countries to help controlling the weigth of very hungry babies, I suppose it’s not available in China. And I pity the poor woman… I hope her family gets the medical help they need.

At that age I nursed my son WAY more than twenty times a day because he was always wanting to eat or just wanted to get reconnected.
That will not cause that much weight gain.
I am linking it to solids he may be on or a medical condition.
Breast milk won’t do that.

No one else things this is truly sickening? Parents who overfeed their children or feed them such unhealthy foods that they get to this level of obesity should be prosecuted for child abuse.
