Julia Roberts – whose look I once coveted so strongly, that I begged my mom for red hair and brown contacts — was honored with the 22nd Annual American Cinematheque Award on Friday night. A-listers such as Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Natalie Portman, Garry Marshall and Sally Field were among the guests who cheered on the Pretty Woman while receiving her award in Beverly Hills.
David Letterman and Richard Gere sent recorded tributes, but it was, of course, my boyfriend’s taped message that brought down the house. Speaking from a public bathroom, where George Clooney said he was hiding from fans, he stopped to look down as another foot tapped his from the adjacent stall. He went to investigate and opened the door on a guilty Brad Pitt, whose words were almost drowned out by the laughter in the hall: “I have a wide stance!”
Those crazy guys.
Meanwhile, Tom Hanks lamented in his speech that, “You might as well be a waffle iron sitting up a tree” when in a scene with Julia — no one is even looking at you.” Denzel then presented Julia with the award, and in his remarks he noted that “she’s someone who says yes to life.”
As members of the audience rose to their feet, Julia took the stage. In addition to thanking her hubby Danny Moder for “the widening of my life, and my hips,” adding that she’s grateful for “just the true gift of my husband Danny, who I would be so lonely without,” the nursing mother also at one point grabbed her bosom and asked the crowd, “Is there a hungry baby in the house? Just come on up!”
Wow. An honoree who even provides the buffet! That’s a good woman, indeed. No word on whether Tom and Garry took advantage of the generous offer.

She looks gorgeous here. She looks soooooooooo much better with red hair. Lindsay and Nicole Kidman should do the same!!!

Candy, your assessment of this event is so much
more worthwhile and delicious than the event itself.
Someone please explain to me why Roberts is
considered 1)beautiful, and 2)a good actor?

librarian kathleen,
She is neither, which emphasizes how fickle fame can be.
All my male friends think Julia is homely. One friend (James) has to work not to stare at the vein on her forehead…which he inevitably does throughout the movie.
Fickle, fickle…fame.

my husband thinks she’s beautiful, as do i. beautiful hair, beautiful smile-and not in that classic way, which makes her all the more interesting. but i guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
i also happen to think she’s very charismatic. i’d go to watch her in anything, even a movie about cleaning toilets.

Sorry, but I avoid Julia Roberts like The Plague. “Closer” is probably one of the most vile, mean-spirited films I’ve ever seen. She was beautiful once, but has amazing makeup artists and stylists to make her hippie a** look good.

like jennifer aniston, she’s a great comedic actress. and comedy is harder than drama, imo. she was also awesome in “steel magnolias”.
as a woman, i have great respect for a female actress who pulls in as much money as the top male actors. she’s obviously doing something right.

ps - i agree about “closer”. i didn’t care about any of those awful characters! but that’s because of the script, not julia.
