Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper Forced ‘Out’

Out magazine has anointed Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster as two of America’s 50 most powerful gay people — but it’s not likely that the CNN anchor and the Oscar winner will be thanking the editors.

Critics within the gay community are blasting the mag for essentially outing Anderson and Jodie in the new issue.

“Your right to privacy is a constitutional right,” says Chris Ciompi, editorial director of Genre, Out’s major competitor. “Maybe Jodie and Anderson would prefer to be known for their work, not their sexuality. The climate of the United States today still would not allow that to occur. With Anderson, many people would perceive his credibility to be undermined.”

Writer Michael Musto argues in his Out cover story that Anderson and Jodie live in a “glass closet,” a “complex but popular contraption that allows public figures to avoid the career repercussions of any personal disclosure while living their lives with a certain degree of integrity.”

As far as gossip-monger Michael Musto being an expert in “integrity”…

… Anderson Cooper simply responded, “Puh-lease.”

Not cool of them to out celebs like that just for publicity.

  2. Say it isn’t so, Jodie. Say it isn’t so. I guess this means if I were to stalk her, it would be to no avail.

That’s a pretty personal decision that should be made by the actual PERSON, not some media outlet.

  4. Kylie

    Cheap publicity stunt.

Julie, I agree. It should be the person’s decision to unveil this personal matter. That’s a rotten thing for the magazine to do.

If Anderson is in fact gay, he would have a pretty compelling reason NOT to come out in that he often reports on location from the middle east, where they execute homosexuals. Seems to me he would be putting his life in danger if he were to make a public acknowledgment about his orientation. That would be reason enough for me to keep quiet about it.
